Just like we’re mindful of what we put into our bodies, your skin has its own "nutrition label" that deserves attention. In this blog, we’re breaking down the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients your skin needs to stay radiant and healthy. We'll tell you what to eat and what skincare ingredients to use to really nourish your skin from the inside out and the outside in!

The Chemical Makeup of Skin

  1. Water (~64%)

    • Skin contains a significant amount of water, particularly in the dermis layer. This is crucial for hydration, elasticity, and overall skin function.

  2. Proteins (~18-20%)

    • Collagen, elastin, and keratin are the primary structural proteins in the skin.

    • Collagen provides strength and structure.

    • Elastin ensures skin's elasticity.

    • Keratin is found in the outermost layer (stratum corneum), forming a protective barrier.

  3. Fats/Lipids (~10-15%)

    • Lipids in the skin include ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.

    • These are critical for the skin barrier, locking in moisture and protecting against irritants.

  4. Minerals (Trace Amounts)

    • Zinc: Helps repair damaged tissue and regenerate skin.

    • Copper: Plays a role in collagen production and melanin synthesis.

    • Selenium: Protects skin from oxidative stress (antioxidant).

  5. Carbohydrates (Minimal)

    • Present in the form of glycosaminoglycans (e.g., hyaluronic acid) that hold water and help maintain skin structure.

  6. Vitamins (Trace)

    • Vitamin A (retinoids): Stimulates cell turnover and repair.

    • Vitamin C: Promotes collagen synthesis and protects against oxidative stress.

    • Vitamin E: Neutralizes free radicals and supports the skin barrier.

  7. pH (4.7-5.5)

    • The skin’s slightly acidic pH helps maintain a healthy microbiome and fend off harmful bacteria.

*Note on Percentages: While water is accurate at ~64%, other values (like proteins or fats) may vary depending on skin type and age.
